Anthropic Targets $1T Valuation as Investors Chase Claude’s Enterprise Growth

Anthropic is reportedly considering raising tens of billions of dollars as early as this summer to fund a sweeping expansion of its computing infrastructure. The fundraising could see the artificial intelligence company’s valuation approach $1 trillion, potentially vaulting it ahead of rival OpenAI.

The developer of the Claude chatbot, valued at $380 billion in February, has drawn interest from investors including Dragoneer, General Catalyst, and Lightspeed Venture Partners as revenue accelerates. A report citing anonymous sources said Anthropic’s annualized revenue is expected to surpass $45 billion imminently, a fivefold increase from $9 billion at the end of last year.

“People are ready to throw any dollar amount at Anthropic,” one investor said. “It’s just about when they want to say they’re ready.”

Sources familiar with the talks said Anthropic is exploring a raise of up to $50 billion at a pre-money valuation of about $900 billion. The round could close within two months, though terms have not been finalized, and the deal may not materialize. OpenAI was valued at $852 billion post-money in March after securing a record $122 billion round.

Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao has been meeting with prospective backers, and existing investors have already begun requesting allocations despite the company not formally launching the process. Investors are eager to build positions ahead of a potential initial public offering expected as soon as late this year.

Given the size of the raise and its public-market ambitions, Anthropic is expected to prioritize firms with experience investing across both public and private markets.

Surging Demand and Computing Constraints

Anthropic’s recent growth has been driven by strong demand for its Claude Code tool for developers and its Cowork assistant for non-technical users. The products have helped the company gain ground with enterprise clients and narrow the gap with OpenAI.

However, the surge in usage has strained Anthropic’s computing capacity. The company has faced supply constraints in recent weeks and is seeking to build a war chest to support a major infrastructure expansion. Demand is expected to rise further as Anthropic prepares a broader release of its new AI model, Mythos, which is currently available only to select partners.

To secure long-term compute access, Anthropic has signed multibillion-dollar agreements in the past two months with SpaceXAI, Google, Broadcom, and Amazon Web Services. Combined, those deals will add hundreds of billions of dollars to its costs over the coming years.

“Anthropic has resolved the biggest bottleneck and potential source of weakness, which is compute,” one investor said.

According to sources familiar with the CFO’s strategy, Rao put high-value funding talks on hold to focus on securing infrastructure deals and a private equity partnership announced on May 4.

The fundraising effort comes as Anthropic faces mounting regulatory headwinds in Washington. The company recently lost a U.S. government contract and was briefly slapped with an adverse federal designation that could restrict its participation in certain government programs. However, a U.S. court later blocked the designation after determining that the move may have isolated the First Amendment, denied Anthropic due process, and exceeded statutory authority under the Administrative Procedure Act.
